The first thing we need to do is get rid of the idea of GDP as a barometer of national success. If we cut down every tree in the country and sell the firewood to another we have improved GDP but also made the lives of citizens miserable.

Making more stuff so people can buy more stuff is not the answer anymore: we need a country where nobody is living below the poverty line.
