The Gorilla Glass story goes even deeper. Corning did indeed invent it in the 1990's but not as a phone screen, just as a concept. Jobs went to the CEO of Corning and asked (well, more demanded) for them to manufacture it at the size and scale needed for the iPhone production line. He replied with an 18 month turnaround but Jobs needed it in 6 for the iPhone launch date. Corning took some advice from Apple, started production and the rest is history.
