The Matter IOT standard is a good step in the right direction for this. UWB also offers the ability to detect a device at a local level.
I always picture a workplace scenario where I walk into my actual lab space, pop on my work AR goggles and glance around the room. An array of sensors and UWB tell me what experiments are finished, whether a machine needs maintenance and so on.
I could then pull up a HUD YouTube video on how to repair said machine, directly from the manufacturer. It may be that a hi-res LiDAR would overlay the instructions on the machine like a lego manual allowing me to repeat the steps in real time.
