The one thing the competitors all have in common is they are forced to run Android. The little green bot is no slouch and has become a lot better as the years have flown past. But it’s still Android and it still has one huge hole Google doesn’t seem interested in fixing: app parity.
At this point in platform maturity it is frankly embarrassing on Google’s part that there are still massive gaps in the Play Store software library. All the big players are present and correct of course. But what of sophisticated apps like Procreate or Pixelmator? A camera app like Spectre? Even a magazine like Edge?
Worse is gaming. Discounting emulators Android is not the place to be if you value premium games not riddled with IAP or ads. Classic iOS titles like Tiny Wings, Trism and Rolando are over a decade old and still have no Android ports.
Even a game like Alto’s Odyssey is just a one-time purchase of a few quid on iOS (including its TV and Tablet versions in the price) whereas on Android its free with an IAP to remove the ads but even then its riddled with IAPs to unlock other stuff.
So whilst the hardware is incredibly more interesting for me its a shell for the same old software.
