The other answer to the perceived lack of any life out there is that the way life appeared on earth is all we have to go by. It could be that there is life out there that, for whatever reason of its creation needs Sulphur Dioxide to breath rather than Oxygen for example.

That race might look at our own world and wonder how anything could survive!
