The USA could never have sat out of the war. Even if Pearl Harbour never happened they knew what the fallout of a war in Europe would mean. As an island nation it made sense to use the UK as a staging post for the allied invasion because they could never have waged war across the Atlantic. It was never about 'just defending the grandfatherland'
