There are many different ways of looking at this deal. I spend a lot more time than I should on comments sections and forums reading about and debating this very issue. These are the trains of thought:

- Its a worrying sign of a land grab. Microsoft buy Activision and Sony counter by hoovering up another valuable asset, probably Square Enix who make Final Fantasy. They have strong historical links with Sony.

- It is a preservation move designed to stop somebody new like Amazon buying them instead, cutting those franchises off from incumbents.

- The real prize is King. The mobile market makes a lot more money than consoles and Microsoft want a piece of the pie.

- Microsoft just want to fatten their Gamepass offering with more perpetual titles
