They didn’t make it slower; they just gave it a lower top-speed. It’s entirely a business decision based on cutting costs

But a MacBook Air customer isn’t looking for top speed. They are looking for portability. Apple didn’t ‘cripple’ the base M2 model, they just know nobody is going to edit 8K video in Final Cut Pro on it.
