We could perhaps say that a need for a case is a failure of product design, that if phones were built with robustness in mind that we wouldn't need one. But then the last phone that didn't need a case was the iPhone 3GS or the HTC G1.

We are a long way from those days and the iPhone 4 casts a long shadow (for good reason: it's a design classic) so they are a necessity.
