What I see as the biggest influence here is Destiny 2 and that is not a good thing. I enjoyed Destiny 2 but like its predecessor it quickly sank under the weight of its own mechanics to the point that a new player is bewildered by the whole thing. Here's hoping Sony have them building a new shooter because the underlying mechanics are brilliant.

Diablo 3 was brilliant. In single player it did a great job of making me feel like one sole hero vs the tide of evil and each character was different enough to make it worth replaying the campaign with each one. There was also enough diversity in skills to make it a decent roleplaying game. My Crusader character, Naavak Norhalen used a lot of the 'summon dead allies' skills and so I wrote him a backstory about being haunted by his deceased brethren. Its skill trees, transmog and post-game systems are wonderfully streamlined.

I won't be playing Diablo 4 because it looks like they just adopted all the negative aspects of Destiny 2 and none of the positives.

Honestly, its not hard. Sega released Phantasy Star Online 20 years ago and that had the template down to a tee: team up with 3 friends, fight through dungeons and bosses, collect loot. Rinse and repeat.
