Where Apple Intelligence differs is in its vertical OS integration. GPT and Gemini are both better AI products but they are essentially command line applications that run from a remote server. Data is send who knows where to be processed and seen by who knows who. They can’t do anything without a web connection.

Apple Intelligence is baked right into the OS and runs most of its base features (image edit and rewrite) on-device. In fact they squashed this model into less than 300mb of RAM. Whilst running on your iPhone it has zero contribution to climate change and no data leaves your device. It works offline.

Rewrite is pretty useful if you’re writing things like notes but who does this on an iPhone. I use it all the time on the iPad Pro. Image editing is useful but not as good as Googles which is 2-3 years ahead. Image Playground is probably a good laugh for kids to mess with but actually pretty horrifying as an adult.
