With Apple's abstentation from USB-C on the iPhone being entirely based on their licencing royalties it would make sense for them to replace it with another proprietary cable to keep annoying customers and maintain that bottom line.

They like to portray themselves as the victim but when Apple use USB-C on their TV Remote they have no leg to stand on. They quite happily adopt other industry standards like WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI etc.
