Your article makes a very valid point but I'd go further than this.
There are still far too many general interactions across iOS (and Android) that require the user to reach outside the hot zone: Notification shade, control center, back shortcut and homescreen icons 'floating' to the top to name but a few.
These are largely leftover vestiges from when iOS was on the 5S and smaller that have never been redesigned.
I have made these as suggestions via Apple's beta feedback pages but iOS17 should be a ground-up redesign of fundamental UX of the phone.
My (admittedly not well thought out) solutions might be moving control center to the RH-side of the multitasking interface, adding the Android side of screen 'back' gesture, making notifications appear at the bottom of the multitasking screen and letting us put icons whereever we want!
